Govt appeals NP court decision

8 Dec 2009

The government of Argentina has appealed a decision by Argentina’s Fifth National Administrative Court in July 2009 ruling that number portability (NP) be legislated for within 90 days, BNamericas reports citing local newspaper Clarin. The Supreme Court is now understood to be responsible for the final decision regarding the implementation of NP. Decree 764 introduced in 2000 first approved NP, but the option for subscribers to change service provider while keeping their existing numbers was never enacted.

Citing local paper El Cronista, BNamericas reports that voice-over-IP (VoIP) supplier Skype expects to negotiate agreements with the country’s mobile operators in 2010. According to Skype’s marketing development and sales manager for Latin America, Alejandro Arnaiz, the company expects the use of its VoIP products will boost sales of mobile broadband services. Arnaiz added that the company may also negotiate deals with fixed telephony and cable TV operators.
