Italian ISP and telco Tiscali has contracted Infinera to provide it with Digital Optical Network infrastructure for its nationwide backbone and metro networks. Tiscali is deploying the ‘Infinera ATN metro edge’ platform in more than 80 urban areas where it already has a strong network presence, with the aim of seamlessly integrating with the new ‘Infinera DTN’ backbone network implementation, with a common network management system. The configuration is designed to support all metro transport services, including Ethernet, SAN, SONET/SDH, OTN and video services. According to the vendor, Infinera’s ‘DTN’ solution makes it possible to deploy a nationwide network far more quickly than with traditional DWDM backbone systems. Meanwhile, Tiscali has undertaken a project to expand the coverage of its local loop unbundling (LLU) network via an extended agreement with Telecom Italia (TI), providing for the unbundling of 200 new sites by mid-2010. The work will expand Tiscali’s LLU access footprint from 486 local exchanges to 686, representing over 40% of subscriber lines on TI’s national PSTN.
