Alca-Lu consortium wins cable deal

3 Dec 2009

Alcatel-Lucent, in partnership with Canadian marine service provider IT International Telecom, has secured a contract to deploy a new 815km submarine cable network to link the Colombian mainland to the San Andres island. With an ultimate design capacity of 960Gbps, the cable will provide the connectivity required to support innovative, IP-based services and applications, such as online tourism services and real estate information, as well as e-education and e-government solutions. It will also give the 85,000 residents access to broadband internet services. The deployment of the cable is one of the goals of the government, under the universal access Compartel programme.
