Telmex increases maximum download speeds to counter competition

Mexican fixed line incumbent Telefonos de Mexico (Telmex) has boosted the highest download speed it offers its broadband customers in a bid to remain competitive with services offered by its rivals. According to Bloomberg, Telmex has increased its downlink speeds to up to 5Mbps, up 25% compared to its previous highest speed. The price of services has remained unchanged however, with Telmex’s top level service costing MXN999 (USD77) per month.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, at the end of September 2009 Telmex held a comfortable lead in the broadband sector, with 6.3 million subscribers.
