ComReg awards 39 FWA licences for broadband

20 Nov 2009

Ireland’s telecoms regulator the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) today announced the conclusion of its recent Fixed Wireless Access competition for 118MHz of spectrum in the 3.6MHz band. In a press statement released today, the watchdog confirmed it received in excess of 120 applications, and as a result has awarded 39 Fixed Wireless Access Local Area (FWALA) licences to seven different operators – Airspeed Communications, Digiweb, Fastcom, Imagine Group, Last Mile Wireless, PermaNet and Regional Broadband.

ComReg’s statement read: ‘These new licences, which cover a large area of the country, address the demand for more spectrum by some operators. This latest initiative will enable them to expand and enhance broadband and services to consumers. Fixed Wireless Broadband serves over 112,000 households and businesses, representing almost 9% of all broadband connections and has been a key driver in the take-up of broadband across the country’.
