The UAE’s two telecoms operators, incumbent Etisalat and second national operator (SNO) Du, are set to complete negotiations on local loop unbundling (LLU) by the end of the year, Emirates Business 24/7 reports, citing a senior official from the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA). ‘Local loop unbundling is under discussion between the two operators…the aim is to finalise all technical processes by the end of December,’ revealed Mohamed Al Ghanim, director general of the TRA. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, Du is currently not permitted to access Etisalat’s nationwide network, but is allowed to provide broadband services to the free economic zones of Dubai, called ‘New Dubai’. The telco inherited the fibre-optic infrastructure in these developments from Sahm Technologies, which was subsequently taken over by Tecom Investments, the government body responsible for a 20% shareholding in Du.
