Hungary’s state-owned postal operator Magyar Posta is preparing to enter the country’s mobile market through an MVNO agreement with network operator Vodafone. Local press reports say the postal firm intends to launch its new service by piggybacking on Vodafone’s network and offering a range of handsets and mobile access packages (with pre-paid cards), in parts of the country where none of the three incumbent cellcos are actively selling through local retail outlets.
Hungary is something of a late developer when it comes to introducing MVNOs in the market place and despite years of talks, nothing has as yet materialised. However, Magyar Posta hopes to change this and has registered the domain www.postafon.hu as a precursor to getting the service off the ground.
