UOL third-quarter dips 17%

Brazil’s largest internet service provider (ISP) by subscribers Universo Online (UOL) posted a net profit of BRL20.2 million (USD11.7 million) for the three months ended 30 September 2009, a 17% fall on the BRL24.3 million it booked in the same period of 2008, the company said in a statement; 9M09 net income reached BRL80.8 million, down 7% year-on-year. The operator booked third-quarter revenues of BRL174 million, however, up 21% on the corresponding period of 2008, and EBITDA climbed 14% y-o-y to BRL33.1 million it said, with an EBITDA margin of 19% – down one percentage point over the same period in 2008. UOL said the total number of subscribers on its books climbed 2% in the January-September period to 1.81 million from 1.78 million in 9M08, including a 17% year-on-year increase in the number of broadband subscribers to 1.34 million.
