Anatel approves Telefonica, Vivendi GVT bids

13 Nov 2009

The Brazilian telecoms regulator Anatel yesterday gave the provisional thumbs up to either Telefonica or Vivendi to take control of the country’s fourth largest broadband internet provider Global Village Telecom (GVT). However, in giving the pair the go-ahead it has set down some conditions on the Spanish operator’s bid, saying that if its local unit Telesp is successful it will have to agree to keep its operations, finances and commercial administration separate from GVT for five years and eliminate overlapping licences. No such restrictions were imposed on Vivendi because the France-based company does not operate in the country yet.
