Chunghwa to deploy GPON in 2010

11 Nov 2009

Taiwanese incumbent operator Chunghwa Telecom has announced plans to deploy gigabit-capable passive optical network (GPON) technology for the first time in 2010, DigiTimes reports. As reported by CommsUpdate on 15 October, Chunghwa plans to spend up to TWD30 billion (USD928.79 million) over the next two to three years to expand its fibre-optic network infrastructure. The company has now added that it will spend approximately TWD12.8 billion on fibre deployments in 2010 alone, including the procurement of GPON equipment. Taiwan-based vendors will benefit from the expansion project as Chunghwa plans to allocate 65-70% of the projected capital for purchases from domestic suppliers.
