Aircel, the Indian mobile subsidiary of Malaysia’s Maxis Communications, is aiming to increase its subscriber base to 50 million by the end of next year, Bernama reports. The cellco, which had 25.7 million subscribers at end-September 2009, is also hoping to reach the 30 million mark by end-2009, with Gurdeep Singh, Aircel’s chief operating officer, noting: ‘We are looking at 50 million customers by December 2010.We will have 30 million by the end of this year. It been a long struggle but we are glad that consumers have liked our approach in bringing the internet on mobile.’

In a bid to increase the pace of its subscriber growth, as reported by CommsUpdate, Aircel announced last month that it had inked a deal with state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) to allow it to access some 45,000 of the latter’s base stations across the country, helping to swiftly expand its coverage area.
