According to a report by ArabianBusiness.com, Kuwaiti cellco Kuwait Telecom Company, which operates as Viva, is thought to have exceeded expectations in its first nine months of operations, claiming 10% of the country’s mobile market by the end of September 2009. Viva is owned by Saudi Telecom Company (26%), local partners (24%), Kuwaiti government-backed institutions (25%) and the Kuwaiti public (25%) and launched services across GSM and W-CDMA networks in competition with established cellcos Zain and Wataniya in December 2008. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database there were around 3.35 million mobile subscribers in Kuwait at the end of June 2009, up from 3.08 million six months earlier. The introduction of a third player can be considered a major factor behind the sustained growth of an already saturated market.
