PTCL and DSL operators sign long-delayed interconnection deal

2 Nov 2009

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd (PTCL) has finally inked an interconnection agreement with the country’s other xDSL operators for the provision of broadband services after pressure from the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA), Pakistan’s Daily Mail reports. Under the new agreement DSL operators will have the choice to acquire IP bandwidth from any other operator, in addition to PTCL, in a move which is expected to help reduce the cost of broadband services to users. The signing of the agreement follows months of debate on the matter; as reported by CommsUpdate, in June 2009 the PTA issued an order on 10 June 2009 calling for both PTCL and private ISPs to sign a new DSL Interconnect Agreement within seven days. However, some three months later, in September 2009, and following complaints from private operators that the incumbent had still yet to sign the agreement, the watchdog issued a two-day deadline, threatening PTCL with legal proceedings.
