MTN subscribership up 5% in Q309

South Africa-based MTN Group has reported that it ended September 2009 with a consolidated customer base of 108.47 million, up 5% from 103.19 million at the end of June 2009. Growth in all of the mobile group’s foreign operations across Africa and the Middle East offset a 4.7% decline in its domestic customer base, which fell to 16.42 million in the three months ended 30 September 2009. MTN’s Rwandan operation reported the strongest growth in the period, up 19.8% over the quarter, up from 1.38 million to 1.65 million at the end of September 2009. Meanwhile, Nigeria remains the company’s largest market with a subscriber base of 28.75 million, growing 5.2% over the quarter, up from 27.34 million at the end of June 2009.
