Mexican watchdog finds Telmex dominant in call completion

28 Oct 2009

Mexico’s antitrust authority, the Comision Federal de Competencia (CFC), has announced that it has reached the conclusion that fixed line incumbent Telefonos de Mexico (Telmex) is dominant in the market for the completion of fixed line voice calls, Bloomberg reports. This completes a trio of decisions made by the CFC in the last four months, with the watchdog having already ruled that Telmex is dominant in the provision of wholesale services in the long-distance sector last month, which followed the decision that it is dominant in the local transit and leased line markets in July 2009. The latest ruling further increases the scope for the Comision Federal de Telecomunicaciones (Cofetel) to step in and impose new regulations against Telmex with a view to increasing competition in the Mexican fixed line sector.
