EU gives nod to Belgacom to take control of BICS

28 Oct 2009

According to Reuters, the European Commission (EC) has cleared Belgian fixed line incumbent Belgacom to take sole control of Belgacom International Carrier Services (BICS). The approval for the deal paves the way for BICS to expand into the fast-growing African market, with the international carrier now expected to purchase the international carrier operations of South African mobile network operator MTN. The EC said that it saw no likely worries that the deal would impact competition, noting: ‘The proposed concentration would not give rise to any competition concerns, given the very small market share of BICS in the global market for wholesale telecommunications services.’
