Cypriot telco Cyta has announced that it has signed two agreements which will facilitate the upgrade its submarine cable capabilities. The first, forged with Syrian firm STE, will upgrade the UGARIT submarine cable which runs between the two countries, providing the capability for multiple 10Gbps connections. The upgrade will be performed in conjunction with similar upgrades on the CADMOS and BERYTAR submarine cables, which together form a high-capacity ring between Syria, Cyprus and Lebanon. The two firms also confirmed plans for the construction of a new high-capacity submarine cable system between Cyprus and Syria, known as ALASIYA. The new system will be in a position to restore the existing UGARIT system between Cyprus-Syria and to provide a high-quality alternative route between the two countries.
The second agreement is with OGERO and is for the upgrade of the CADMOS submarine cable system which runs between Cyprus and Lebanon. The pair also confirmed their willingness to proceed with the planning and construction of a new high-capacity submarine cable system between Cyprus and Lebanon. The new system will be in a position to restore the existing CADMOS system between Cyprus – Lebanon, providing a high-quality alternative route between the two countries, and forming a bridge between I-ME-WE cable system landing in Lebanon and ALEXANDROS cable subsystem landing in Cyprus.
