Filipino telecoms operator Globe Telecom’s wireless broadband network has been ‘temporarily overwhelmed’ by a massive surge in subscribers following a price war among local operators. The Manila Times writes that Globe slashed the price of its ‘Globe Broadband Tattoo’ offer from PHP1,895 (USD40.24) to PHP895 in response to rival offers from Smart’s ‘Smart Bro Prepaid’ kit (now PHP995) and Sun Cellular’s ‘Easy Broadband Plan (PHP799), resulting in significant subscriber uptake that crippled the service. The company’s president and chief executive, Ernest Cu, said that Globe Telecom is working hard to remedy the situation by expanding its bandwidth capacity to support the growing number of Globe Tattoo users. Globe’s pre-paid wireless broadband subscriber base has grown 400% since it was launched in February. As at 30 June 2009 Globe’s cumulative broadband subscriber base more than doubled from 148,769 in 2008 to 379,309, driven by the exceptional growth of Globe Broadband Tattoo. The company says wireless broadband subscribers comprised 54% of the total customer base at that date, up from 19% previously. Revenues from the broadband operation likewise have risen by 59% to PHP1.362 billion from PHP855 million in 2008.
