Rwanda’s largest mobile operator by subscribers, MTN Rwanda, expects to hit the two million customer milestone by the end of the year, local daily The New Times reports, citing the cellco’s senior marketing executive Yvonne Makoro. The report adds that MTN currently has around 1.7 million wireless subscribers and hopes to acquire 50% of the six million new mobile users targeted by Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Agency (RURA) by 2012. As previously reported by CommsUpdate, a third operator is set to join MTN and its rival Rwandatel in November. Luxembourg-based Millicom International Cellular’s (MIC’s) Tigo is looking to gain a toehold in the market, after being awarded a cellular concession in November 2008. So far the company has invested over USD100 million in the rollout of a GSM network.
