Brazil’s mobile base up marginally to 166.1m in September

The number of registered mobile phones in Brazil climbed 1% in September to 166.1 million, according to new data published by the country’s telecoms regulator Anatel. The total number of net additions last month reached 1.58 million, below the 2.60 million reported in August, and reflecting a slowdown in marketing and promotional strategies among the main market protagonists. As at 30 September Vivo Participacoes retained its leading position in the sector with 29.40% of the market, up from 29.38% in August. Second place was claimed once again by Telecom Americas (Claro), the local unit of Mexico’s America Movil, which was unchanged at 25.40% despite reporting a fall in net additions. TIM Participacoes’ market share was also stable at 23.8%, while fourth-placed mobile operator Telemar (Oi) registered a share of 20.93%.
