Vivo to share 12,000km of fibre with other operators by 2012

Brazil’s largest mobile operator by subscribers Vivo says it plans to share a total of 12,000km of fibre-optic networks with other telecoms operators by 2012, BNamericas quotes its president Roberto Oliveira de Lima as saying. The official said the transmission network it is currently rolling out in partnership with fellow mobile provider Claro and Brazilian fixed line operator Embratel will be operational from 2010 and will cover the southern states of Parana, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. The network will benefit from a total extension of 4,500km with each partner rolling out and being responsible for 1,500km. Further fibre-optic deployments of 4,500km and 3,000km will follow under a similar set up, he added, although he was unable to confirm which other operators would participate in these future projects.
