16 Oct 2009

The Carphone Warehouse Group has announced that its mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) joint venture with Richard Branson’s Virgin Group, Virgin Mobile France, is buying French rival Tele2 Mobile for EUR56 million (USD83.6 million). UK-based Carphone Warehouse owns 48.5% of Virgin Mobile France and is looking to consolidate its position in the French virtual operator segment. Upon completion of the deal, which is conditional on the approval of the French anti-trust authorities, Virgin Mobile France will have more than 1.6 million customers, of which 40% are pre-paid users, cementing its position as the country’s largest MVNO and the fourth largest cellco overall. At the end of June 2009 Tele2 France had approximately 429,000 mobile customers.
