Yota tests WiMAX Release 2.0

7 Oct 2009

Russian WiMAX specialist Yota has announced that, together with its partner Samsung, it has commenced testing of the next version of mobile WiMAX technology: Release 2.0 (IEEE 802.16m standard). The firm plans to start installing WiMAX Release 2.0 solutions from Samsung across its network by the end of 2010, predicting that the standard will provide higher performance than 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. The 802.16m-based solution by Samsung will be demonstrated during the international ITU World Telecoms Fair 2009 in Geneva. This solution comprises Samsung U-RAS Flexible base stations with upgraded modules, existing WiMAX devices and the prototype of a new device developed for WiMAX Release 2.0. The purpose of the demonstration is to showcase the full backward compatibility between the WiMAX Release 2.0 (802.16m) and 802.16e WiMAX technologies.
