Director general of Instituto Nacional das Comunicacoes (INCM), Americo Muchanga, has told Portuguese news agency Lusa that a tender for the award of Mozambique’s third national mobile licence is likely to be held between June and September 2010, MacauHub reports. As reported by CommsUpdate on 15 July, the Mozambican cabinet ordered the INCM to commence preparations for the international public tender, which would see a third national operator established to compete with the duopoly of mCel and Vodacom Mozambique. The regulator is reportedly studying proposals from 26 consultancy companies all vying to win the contract to draw up the tender document. Muchanga said: ‘We project that all the work (drawing up the tender document and launch of the public tender) will take place over the next year.’
According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, there were 4.88 million mobile subscribers in Mozambique by the end of June 2009, up from 3.87 million a year earlier, as wireless penetration grew from 17.8% to 22.4%.
