Clearwire has announced that it has selected Israel’s Alvarion and ZTE of China to supply the equipment needed for the rollout of commercial WiMAX services in Spain. US-owned Clearwire expects to launch WiMAX services utilising the 3.5GHz spectrum band in 2010, with rollout initially taking place in select cities. Under the terms of these latest contracts Alvarion will provide hardware for the launch in Malaga, while ZTE will be responsible for delivering equipment in Seville. ‘We believe WiMAX affords Clearwire an unprecedented time-to-market advantage in meeting the pent up demand for wireless broadband services in Europe,’ said Barry West, president of Clearwire International, adding, ‘Further, this deployment will serve to demonstrate the viability of 3.5GHz spectrum for advanced wireless services and add Alvarion and ZTE to the already robust WiMAX infrastructure ecosystem.’
