Movistar switches on commercial 3.5G in Barquisimeto

Telefonica’s Venezuelan subsidiary Movistar has expanded its commercial 3.5G mobile services to the city of Barquisimeto in the state of Lara, reports BNamericas. Movistar’s W-CDMA/HSPA network footprint also includes Greater Caracas, Maracaibo, Valencia, Maracay, Puerto La Cruz, Puerto Ordaz, San Cristobal, Margarita, Maturín, Trujillo, Tucupita, Cumana, Merida, Valera and Ciudad Bolivar. Movistar launched commercial W-CDMA/HSPA services in December 2008 in the Greater Caracas area, according to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database. The expansion to Barquisimeto in the central region of the country had previously been announced in March 2009, but according to the company’s latest announcement a full commercial 3.5G service is now available across the city for handset and other device users.
