2 Oct 2009

Vietnamese mobile operator Vinaphone has announced it will launch third generation services on 12 October, reports VietnamNet. If it meets the launch deadline, Vinaphone will become the first cellco in the country to provide 3G services. The state-owned VNPT-subsidiary has successfully tested its 3G offering, which includes videocalling, mobile TV and broadband internet services. Vinaphone’s deputy director, Ho Duc Thang, said the company has finalised the installation of thousands of 3G base transceiver stations and the connection between its current 2G and 3G networks, adding that tariffs will be announced on launch day. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, Vinaphone was awarded a licence to operate 3G services by the Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) in April 2009, along with Viettel, MobiFone and a consortium between EVN Telecom and Hanoi Telecom. The trio are understood to be currently testing 3G services.
