The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has announced its decision to extend until 2012 Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company’s (PLDT’s) provisional authority to operate the Philippine terminal station of the 20,000km Asia America Gateway (AAG) submarine cable network, Business Mirror reports. With the target date for the full operation of the AAG cable project set as end-September, the NTC says is has extended PLDT’s authority to operate and maintain the Philippine station of the AAG landing station in Bauang, La Union from 27 June 2009 until 27 June 2012. The cable is seen as a key factor in driving the country’s economic growth. The AAG cable will provide capacity to meet increasing demand for bandwidth and will also provide additional resilience in the region should other cables break down. The other terminal stations are located in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Guam, Hawaii and US Mainland.
