Paltel and Alca-Lu sign optical backbone upgrade deal

French-US vendor Alcatel-Lucent has been selected by Palestine Telecommunications Company (Paltel) to modernise the incumbent’s existing optical transport network. Under the deal Alca-Lu will deploy its 1830 Photonic Service Switch (1830 PSS), as well as it 1850 Transport Service Switch (1850 TSS), and the network upgrades will enhance capacity, flexibility and scalability on Paltel’s infrastructure, allowing it to address increasing bandwidth needs as its subscriber base continues to grow. In addition it is understood that the project will allow Paltel to enhance its wholesale bandwidth offering for national transit traffic. The work is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2010. Commenting on the deal Mohannad Heajawi, Paltel’s general manager, said: ‘With this backbone transformation, we will strategically take a significant step to meet our end-users’ increasing demand for broadband Internet and mobile data services. We are confident that Alcatel-Lucent’s state-of-the-art optical solution will give us the resiliency, scalability and outstanding service performance necessary to deliver innovative broadband services, along with the ability to leverage the investment we have in our existing network.’
