Telecoms giant France Telecom (FT) has confirmed the death of a 51-year old worker from the eastern Haute-Savoie region, marking the 24th confirmed suicide at the phone company in 18 months. In a note found nearby, the unnamed father of two blamed his decision to throw himself off a bridge on the ‘atmosphere’ at his workplace. AP News reports that earlier this month the French labour minister Xavier Darcos ordered an official to monitor FT’s health and safety meetings following the spate of suicides. Local unions have called into question whether a decision to restructure the former state-run behemoth could be to blame for some of the suicides. FT laid off some 22,000 staff between 2006 and 2008.
