Fecosur to launch MVNO service in near future

28 Sep 2009

Argentine telecoms cooperatives federation Fecosur plans to launch mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) services under the ‘Nuestro Movil’ banner in the near future, under an agreement with cellco Telecom Personal, writes BNamericas, citing local paper El Cronista. Pilot tests with 30 mobile phones were expected to be launched yesterday (27 September) in several municipalities, including Colonia Caroya, Rio Tercero, Villa Gesell, San Bernardo, Mar del Plata, Pergmanino, San Bernardo, Balcarce and Dolores. Trials are slated for completion in January 2010.

Argentina’s other telecoms cooperatives federation, Fecotel, is also negotiating with incumbent telco Telecom Argentina’s mobile arm, Personal, to offer mobile telephony through an MVNO scheme. In 2007 telecoms ministry SeCom authorised the two coops to provide mobile telephony services, but the government has not yet awarded the necessary spectrum enabling the duo to launch services over their own network infrastructure. Together, Fecosur and Fecotel represent around 300 telecoms cooperatives across the country.
