US-based hardware vendor Airspan Networks has announced that it has been selected to provide its advanced WiMAX solutions for a network deployment across major cities in Bolivia by Co-operativa de Telecomunicaciones Santa Cruz (COTAS), the incumbent local telephony provider in Santa Cruz. Under the deal Airspan will roll out a WiMAX network operating on the 3.5GHz spectrum, with the vendor utilising its MicroMAX and HiperMAX platforms. The infrastructure will deliver broadband data and other high-end IP applications, and at launch commercial services are expected to be available in the regions of Santa Cruz, La Paz and Cochabamba utilising HiperMAX base stations, while Sucre, Tarija, Trinidad, Oruro and Potosi will be covered by MicroMAX base units. Commenting on the deal, Kurt Klein, Planning and Engineering Manager of COTAS, said: ‘Airspan’s equipment is enabling us to reach a broader range of customers and to provide them with improved connectivity and applications. We are especially happy to have equipment that can overcome some of the rugged terrain challenges we face in Bolivia. HiperMAX is a robust and reliable solution that can reach both our urban as well as our rural customers. We are hopeful that by bridging the digital divide, we can help improve the quality of life and the overall economic situation in Bolivia.’
