Deutsche Telekom (DT) has opened preliminary negotiations with both Clearwire and MetroPCS to gain access to wireless spectrum as it looks to expand its US networks, Bloomberg reports. DT’s T-Mobile USA unit is yet to announce its 4G expansion plans, while rivals AT&T, Verizon and Sprint have already begun upgrading their systems and the company is weighing up its options, looking for the most cost-effective way to build a national 4G network. In August Clearwire announced that it needed USD2 billion by year-end to complete its own network expansion and DT is reportedly willing to plug the gap in funding in exchange for access to wireless frequency. A similar deal has apparently been tabled with MetroPCS, which, like Clearwire, has a wealth of spectrum suitable for 4G networks.
