Tigo Rwanda to launch by year-end

23 Sep 2009

Luxembourg-based telecoms operator Millicom International Cellular (MIC) plans to launch wireless operations in Rwanda under the Tigo banner by the end of 2009, reports local daily The New Times, citing CEO of MIC’s Rwandan operations, Alex Kamara. ‘I cannot tell you the exact time, but what I can say is that we have been working extremely hard ever since we arrived. We are going to launch before the end of this year; that is our goal,’ Kamara said, adding that so far the company has invested over USD100 million in the rollout of a GSM network in Rwanda. According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms database, MIC became Rwanda’s third licensed mobile operator in November 2008, after winning the tender for a 15-year licence with a bid of USD60 million, beating competition from Telecel Globe, Zain and Larrycom-Expresso.
