China Mobile has announced that at the end of August its 3G subscriber base stood at 1.33 million, an increase of 239,000 on the previous month’s tally. The increase reversed a worrying decline in new subscribers, with the company recording 213,000 new subscribers in June and just 129,000 in July. However, the relatively slow pace of 3G take-up has called into question the company’s own goal of winning three million 3G users by the end of the year. Wang Jianzhou, chairman of China Mobile, said earlier this year that the company would spend RMB6 billion (USD880 million) on 3G network construction this year.
At the end of August China Mobile’s total wireless subscriber base stood at 502.9 million.
