MakTel, T-Mobile Macedonia to merge?

21 Sep 2009

Makedonski Telekom (MakTel) and mobile phone operator T-Mobile Macedonia, will undergo a reorganisation or merger by the end of the year, according to the management boards of the two companies. The Macedonian telcos are 51%-owned by Hungary’s Magyar Telekom, which in turn is controlled by Deutsche Telekom.

According to TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database, MakTel reported a solid if unspectacular 2008, with fixed line revenues declining by 6.7% year-on-year as a result of increasing competition from alternative fixed line providers, such as On.Net’s Ontel unit, and mobile operators. The increasingly competitive sector coupled with the unfavorable economic environment in Macedonia resulted in an increased annual churn rate and further decline in outgoing traffic, prompting MakTel to embark upon a three-year EUR160 million (USD205.7 million) network modernisation programme in 2009 to stop a further decline in its fixed line telephony business.
