Court overrules veto of Multicanal, Cablevision merger

21 Sep 2009

An Argentine court has annulled a ruling filed by federal broadcasting committee Comfer earlier this month which vetoed the merger between cable operators Cablevision and Multicanal, writes Reuters citing court sources. Both cablecos are owned by Argentine media giant Grupo Clarin, which is embroiled in a dispute with President Cristina Fernandez and her predecessor, former president Nestor Kirchner. The government first approved the merger in December 2007 during Kirchner’s administration, however earlier this month the head of Comfer, Gabriel Mariotto, reportedly said that Cablevision already holds more licences than allowed by local regulations.
