Finnish hardware vendor Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has announced that it has been appointed by Hutchison Telecommunications Hong Kong Holdings Limited (HTHKH) as the sole vendor and partner for the cellco’s modernisation and expansion project. Under the terms of the deal NSN will deploy HSPA+ technology across HTHKH’s existing 3G infrastucture, providing its compact base station technology, the Flexi BTS, and Direct Tunnel solution which provides a flat architecture platform as well as mobile softswitching technology; the vendor claims that its technologies will increase the cellco’s operational efficiency. As part of the five-year framework agreement HTHKH will purchase equipment worth at least HKD350 million (USD45.1 million). ‘The network upgrade project run in conjunction with NSN will represent another milestone in our network and service development, significantly increasing our capacity to cater to the growing demand for mobile data,’ said Daniel Chung, chief technical officer of HTHKH. No timeframe for completion of the project has been announced.
