US Cellular applies for stimulus funding

11 Sep 2009

US Cellular has announced that it has applied for stimulus funding under the government’s Broadband Initiatives Programme (BIP), seeking USD23.43 million to expand its 3G mobile broadband networks into rural areas of California (USD2.95 million), Kansas (USD3.7 million), Missouri (USD11.2 million) and Nebraska (USD5.58 million). The BIP was established in response to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which has set aside USD7.2 billion in total to promote access to broadband services in rural and underserved communities. As reported by CommsUpdate in July 2009, vice president Joe Biden launched the USD4.7 billion BIP, stating that the first round of funding would be awarded in September.
