Finland-based equipment vendor Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has been unveiled by Russian mobile operator MegaFon as the winner of its tender for the right to supply and construct 3G networks for the cellco. NSN will supply at least 60% of 3G node-B base stations for the operator’s upcoming network expansion. In total five firms will collaborate on the company’s 3G deployments and evolutionary upgrades until the end of 2010: NSN, Huawei, Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson and ZTE. In addition, Huawei Technologies and NSN will provide MegaFon’s staff with full technical support for the supplied equipment. The cellco says that it will decide upon the territory of the deployments within Russia and that there will be no exclusivity rights granted to vendors. Oleg Nikolayenko, technology director of MegaFon, said: ‘The top priority for MegaFon is to construct the best 3G networks in Russia providing subscribers with top quality and affordable telecommunication services.’ MegaFon has hired Huawei and NSN in the past to deploy its 3G and HSDPA networks.
