Econet relaunches GSM payphone service

3 Sep 2009

Mobile operator Econet Wireless Zimbabwe is relaunching its GSM payphone service ‘YourFone’, aiming to deploy 25,000 new units to entrepreneurs across the country in the next six months. The company previously distributed around 10,000 YourFone payphones to self-employed operators, but expansion of the service was put on hold along with other network developments amidst the country’s devastating economic crash. Now, with the era of hyperinflation over, and Econet rapidly expanding its networks and services (including a commercial 3G launch earlier this week), its CEO Douglas Mboweni announced it was time to relaunch YourFone to capitalise on the ongoing coverage expansion and offer services to the thousands of people who cannot afford their own handsets, particularly in rural areas. At the same time, YourFone also offers a new source of income in a country where an estimated 80% of people are without official employment.
