Mobile subs approach 100m

Vietnamese state-owned newspaper Nhan Dan reports that the country was home to more than 113.7 million phone subscribers at the end of August 2009, up 70.5% compared to the same period a year earlier. The figure includes 96.5 million mobile customers and 17.2 million fixed phone subscribers, reflecting year-on-year increases of 80% and 31.7% respectively. The report adds that the total subscriber base of state-owned Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) reached 62.4 million at the end of August, up 66.4% year-on-year. The group’s fixed telephony customers climbed 18.7% year-on-year to total 11.8 million, while the number of mobile users of VNPT-owned cellcos, including MobiFone and Vinaphone, jumped 83.5% compared to the same period a year earlier to reach 50.6 million. Vietnam’s broadband internet subscriber base topped 2.7 million at end-August 2009, an increase of 47% against the same period in 2008. Of the total, 1.8 million users subscribed to VNPT services, up 67.5% year-on-year.
