Malaysian WiMAX provider Packet One Networks (P1) has marked the end of its first year of operations by announcing that it has signed up 80,000 subscribers since it launched, reports MIS Asia. Commenting on the milestone, Michael Lai, P1’s CEO, said: ‘The subscriber base of more than 80,000 in the first year may be the largest WiMAX uptake, relative to population size in the world.’ The operator has also claimed that it is on track to achieve its 65% coverage target, stating that it currently offers services in nine Malaysian states; Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Penang, Kedah, Perak, Pahang, Terengganu and Negeri Sembilan. P1 expects to reach 35% population coverage by end-2009, rising to 45% and 65% in 2010 and 2012 respectively.
