Belgian mobile operator BASE has reiterated that it plans to launch HSPA services by the end of 2009. The cellco, which previously revealed its intentions to roll out HSPA services in April 2009, is expected to initially launch the network in Belgium’s major cities. In its latest update on its plans, BASE said HSPA would be ‘systematically rolled out further in line with the increasing demand for mobile data services’. BASE already has ‘nationwide’ EDGE coverage, and it says that the introduction of HSPA will complement its existing infrastructure.
In addition to reaffirming its launch plans, BASE has also stated that it will continue to focus its efforts on developing services aimed at the consumer, SOHO and SME markets. It claims that its decision not to target the corporate market is a result of what it calls market leader Proximus’s ‘contested practices’, which it claims have made the sector more closed to competition than ever.
