China Unicom announces details of USD1.5bn broadband project

Chinese telco China Unicom has told local press that 80% of its broadband users will have access to higher than 2Mbps download speeds by the end of this year, as part of a USD1.5 billion network upgrade, writes CommsDay. Unicom also said it is rolling out fibre-to-the-building (FTTB) and WLAN access services to new communities and combined FTTB/DSL access services in many Chinese urban areas, whilst cooperating with third-parties to develop value added services based on high speed broadband technology, such as audiovisual applications, entertainment and gaming.
