China Telecom contracts Alcatel-Lucent for IP/MPLS backbone

China Telecom has inked a deal with Alcatel-Lucent for the provision and maintanence of an IP/MPLS backbone across ten provinces (Guangxi, Hubei, Jiangxi, Ningxia, Sichuan, Jiangsu, Guizhou, Gansu, Xinjiang and Shanghai). Deployment is due to be completed by October 2009, at which point the telco will be able to deliver broadband services including IPTV, WebTV and VPNs. According to the vendor, the deal is part of the USD700 million framework agreement recently signed between the two companies.
