Dow Jones reports that Spanish telecoms group Telefonica’s Ecuadorian mobile subsidiary Movistar plans to increase its previously announced investment forecast for 2009 by 30% to around USD130 million. The company plans to invest a total of around USD400 million in the medium term to expand and upgrade networks and services including rolling out 3G infrastructure and applications and migrating the remainder of its CDMA user base to GSM. According to data from the regulator, Ecuador had 12.22 million mobile subscribers at the end of June, with GSM/W-CDMA operator Concecel (Porta Celular), owned by Mexico’s America Movil, leading the market with 8.66 million users, followed by Movistar with 3.25 million GSM/CDMA customers and state-run CDMA operator Telecsa (Alegro PCS) with 312,000 (although Alegro’s figure may not include GSM subscribers served over third-party infrastructure, which takes its total to over half a million according to other reports).
