AT&T to launch 3G across 850MHz band

24 Aug 2009

US-based cellco AT&T Mobility has announced that it is in the process of switching on 3G services in the 850MHz frequency band in certain markets across the country, boosting its network coverage and capacity. The company freed up wireless spectrum when it shut down its TDMA and AMPS networks in February 2008. Mark Siegel, a spokesman for AT&T, said: ‘The 850MHz band is excellent spectrum because it propagates the signal much better. When we deploy it, people really notice significant improvements.’ The company has not identified which markets are involved in the upgrade at the time of writing.
