Telecoms equipment supplier Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has announced that has been contracted to upgrade the microwave radio network of operator Hutchison 3G Austria (3 Austria) in an extended contract with an undisclosed value. NSN will deploy its mobile backhaul solution to help the cellco efficiently handle the expected rise in mobile data traffic, the solution comprises microwave radio and carrier ethernet transport, and can carry increased amounts of traffic across 2G, 3G, WiMAX and long term evolution (LTE) networks. ‘Mobile internet access is driving our growth and we want to continue to ride the wave,’ said Jan Trionow, CTO of Hutchison 3G Austria. ‘NSN will help us turbo charge data download rates in the mobile broadband network. This enables our customers to surf the web even faster and more effectively than using a fixed line connection. Additionally, we are now in a better position to offer new services like video on demand to the subscribers of 3 Austria,’ Trionow added. The Finnish-German joint venture has been working with 3 Austria, part of the Hong Kong-based Hutchison Whampoa group, since 2002.
