The Malaysian government’s research unit, MIMOS, has launched what it claims is the world’s first WiMAX and Wi-Fi hybrid solution, in a bid to help achieve the state’s target of 50% broadband penetration by 2010, The Industry Standard reports. Commenting on the launch, Dato Abdul Wahab Abdullah, MIMOS’s president and chief executive, said: ‘The MIMOS WiWi technology platform operating on 2.3GHz frequency, which has been designed as a last mile broadband connectivity solution to accelerate the country’s broadband penetration, is now ready for nationwide commercialisation.’ Wahab also noted that the technology could be adapted to enable broadband connectivity in rural regions, and as part of the development MIMOS has signed collaboration agreements with three of the country’s WiMAX operators; REDtone, Packet One Networks (P1) and Asiaspace.
